It was also his second and last single to reach No. In Oceania , it narrowly missed topping the Australian charts, peaking at No.

The single became one of the best selling of the year across North America, Central Europe and Oceania. It is one of the best-selling UK singles of all time.

In late , Nile Rodgers met David Bowie in the New York after hours club Continental, where the two developed a rapport over industry acquaintances and shared musical interests.

Bowie, using a string acoustic guitar that had only six strings, played Rodgers a 2-chord pattern, which the latter would later describe as "dark sounding" and a "folk song"; Bowie wanted to call it "Let's Dance" and believed it to be a hit.

In , Rodgers recalled "This [demo] recording was the first indication of what we could do together as I took his 'folk song' and arranged it into something that the entire world would soon be dancing to and seemingly has not stopped dancing to for the last 35 years!

The music video which uses the shorter single version was made in March by David Mallet on location in Australia including a bar in Carinda in New South Wales and the Warrumbungle National Park near Coonabarabran.

In the beginning, it featured Bowie with a double bass player inside the one-room pub at the Carinda Hotel and an Aboriginal couple 'naturally' dancing "to the song they're playin' on the radio".

As Bowie opted for real people, some residents of the souls village of Carinda are in the pub too, watching and mocking the couple. They do not understand who David is nor what the take is all about, hence their behaviour towards the couple as seen in the video is real.

The red shoes mentioned in the song's lyrics appear in several contexts. The couple wanders solemnly through the outback with some other Aboriginal people, when the young woman finds a pair of mystical red pumps on a desert mountain and instantly learns to dance.

Bowie's calling 'put on your red shoes' recalls Hans Christian Andersen 's tale " The Red Shoes ", in which the little girl was vainly tempted to wear the shoes only to find they could not be removed, separating her from God 's grace — "let's dance for fear your grace should fall" [18] "The red shoes are a found symbol.

They are the simplicity of the capitalist society and sort of striving for success — black music is all about 'Put on your red shoes'", as Bowie confirmed.

Soon, the couple is visiting museums, enjoying candlelit dinners and casually dropping credit cards, drunk on modernity and consumerism.

During a stroll through an arcade of shops, the couple spots the same pair of red pumps for sale in a window display, their personal key to joy and freedom.

Bowie described this video and the video for his subsequent single, " China Girl " as "very simple, very direct" statements against racism and oppression, but also a very direct statement about integration of one culture with another.

The song introduced Bowie to a new, younger audience unaware of his s work. Although the track was his most popular to date, its very success had the incongruous effect of distancing Bowie from his new fans, with Bowie saying he did not know who they were or what they wanted.

The shorter, single version of "Let's Dance" has appeared on numerous compilation albums , the first being Changesbowie in , [25] and was remastered, along with the entire Let's Dance album, on the box set Loving the Alien — In the movie Zoolander , the song plays as Bowie appears in the movie.

Jimmy Fallon covered the song as a tribute to Bowie on a episode of Saturday Night Live ; [29] the episode was the first-ever to be broadcast live across the entire United States.

Nile Rodgers also played the song on guitar. The track was a regular on the Serious Moonlight Tour the name derived from a lyric in "Let's Dance" , and was released on the concert video Serious Moonlight.

It was played acoustically in and then reworked semi-acoustically for tours in and later. Bowie's 25 June performance of the song at the Glastonbury Festival was released in on Glastonbury From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

A few years later, Bowie discussed his feelings on the track "Ricochet" which Musician magazine called an "incendiary ballroom raveup" [2] from this album:.

I thought it was a great song, and the beat wasn't quite right. It didn't roll the way it should have, the syncopation was wrong.

It had an ungainly gait; it should have flowed. Nile [Rodgers] did his own thing to it, but it wasn't quite what I'd had in mind when I wrote the thing.

Bowie later described the title track the same way: the original demo was "totally different" from the way that Nile arranged it. Paul Trynka , the author of Bowie's biography, Starman , explains the song was inspired by Pop's infatuation with Kuelan Nguyen, a Vietnamese woman, as a metaphor for his Stooges career.

I thought it was a song about speedballing. I thought, in the drug community in New York, coke is girl, and heroin is boy. So then I proceeded to do this arrangement which was ultra pop.

Because I thought that, being David Bowie, he would appreciate the irony of doing something so pop about something so taboo. And what was really cool was that he said 'I love that!

Long-time collaborator Carlos Alomar , who had worked with Bowie since the mids and would continue to work with Bowie into the mids, has claimed he was offered an "embarrassing" fee to play on the album and refused to do so.

The album was a big commercial success, though opinions varied on the artistic content. One reviewer called it "Bowie at his best".

In a retrospective review for AllMusic , Stephen Thomas Erlewine felt that the album's three hit singles were catchy yet distinctive pop songs, while the rest of the album was "unremarkable plastic soul " indicative of Bowie "entering a songwriting slump".

He continued " Otherwise, the record had a great deal in common with Wham! He stated " Let's Dance may have had a ground-breaking sound and a popularity that Bowie clearly ached for, but it's often a mundane album, as songs like 'Ricochet' and 'Shake It' mark time".

He said the album was "literally the template for 80s Bowie — blonde, suited and smiling". In , the album was ranked number 83 on Rolling Stone ' s list of the " Best Albums of the Eighties".

Although Bowie had charged producer Nile Rodgers with making hits for him, [41] Bowie later said "at the time, Let's Dance was not mainstream.

It was virtually a new kind of hybrid, using blues-rock guitar against a dance format. There wasn't anything else that really quite sounded like that at the time.

So it only seems commercial in hindsight because it sold so many [copies]. It was great in its way, but it put me in a real corner in that it fucked with my integrity.

I had every intention of continuing to do some unusual material after that. But the success of that record really forced me, in a way, to continue the beast.

It was my own doing, of course, but I felt, after a few years, that I had gotten stuck. Bowie later said that the success of the album caused him to hit a creative low point in his career which lasted the next few years.

And it was depressing, because I didn't know what they wanted. All tracks are written by David Bowie , except where noted. An eponymous music video extended play was released in of the three promotional films for the album on Beta, VHS and laserdisc.

EMI did the second rerelease in featuring bit digitally remastered sound and no bonus tracks. In , there was a reissue in the UK which was similar to the rerelease but did not include the bonus track.

The Canadian version of the EMI release includes a data track, so that when the CD is loaded on a Windows PC, the user is presented with a promotion of internet access services and other premium content from the davidbowie.

This marks one of the earliest attempts by a mainstream artist to combine internet and normal promotion and distribution methods.

In , the album was remastered for the Loving the Alien — box set released by Parlophone. Credits are adapted from the album's liner notes.
