Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (Leonardo/ISAST) is a nonprofit organization that serves the global network of distinguished scholars, artists, scientists, researchers and thinkers through our programs focused on interdisciplinary work, creative output and innovation. From its beginnings, Leonardo/ISAST has served as THE virtual community for purposes of networking, resource-sharing, best practices, research and events in Art/Science/Technology.
The Science Engineering Arts, and Design (SEAD) report was published this year as “Steps to an Ecology of Networked Knowledge and Innovation” (MIT Press, 2015). It covers trends in the rising cost of education and concurrent number of MOOCs, DOCCs and low-residency postdoc programs that are restructuring higher education; the increasing number of STEAM initiatives; new phases in the maker/hacker phenomenon; ubiquity of 3D printing; increasing strength of social media “citizen justice” and “citizen science” fora; the rising need for peer review of transdisciplinary research and creative work; and the formation of new organisations such as a2ru in the USA, or the open publishing and open science movements that often involve artists.
SEAD will update this report soon on the MIT Press publication. SEAD will also host a panel discussion that emphasizes new developments and trends in relating; enabling new forms of collaboration between science, engineering and the arts and design at the 2016 US College Art Association (CAA) conference, February 3-6 in Washington, DC, USA. At this session, the results of the “snapshot” update will be included.
